Lot Essay

A jar of this form with very similar lotus scroll in underglaze blue, but with a central band of iron red and green-glazed chrysanthemum scroll, is illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 203, no. 8:22, where the author notes that "comparison of the lotus scroll with datable imperial porcelains suggests that the jar was made in the Zhengde period". See, also, the larger jar painted all in iron-red, with a similarly decorated central band of Arabic inscriptions, sold in these rooms, 18 September 2003, lot 290.
