The Commercial Cable Company was formed in 1883 by John Mackay, a mining magnate, and Gordon Bennett, owner of the New York Herald, to compete with the Western Union Atlantic service. Six Atlantic cables were laid for the company between 1884 and 1923. Of these six the S.S.Faraday laid the first 3 and part of the 5th and 6th. The majority of these drawings were made on the third and fourth expeditions.
