Lot Essay

The 'Black' album (it had no official title) was the much-anticipated follow-up to the very successful Sign O'The Times LP, 1986, which is widely regarded as Prince's definitive work. Before the album was released to the market however, Prince recalled all copies and abandoned the entire project, leaving roughly 100 promotional copies in circulation, copies that would be widely bootlegged in the coming years.
