Lot Essay
The present biscuit portrait, dated 1898, is a reduction of the life-size monument made at Sèvres in the same material and installed in the garden of the Russian Embassy in honor of Tsar Nicholas II's visit to Paris in 1896.
Jean-Baptiste-Gustave Déloye was employed as a sculptor at the Sèvres factory 1888-1897. He exhibited a plaster model for the monument at the Paris Salon of 1892 (no. 2498). This maquette, at 51 cm. high slightly larger than the present biscuit, is now in the Musée d'Angers, a gift of the artist's widow in 1900.
