The child portrayed here is Jean Renoir, the artist's second son, born on September 15th 1894, who later became a celebrated film director. Relating to a series of paintings and pastels dating from 1895-1896, the present lithograph with hand-coloring appears to be a proof prior to the color edition of 1898-1899.
