This box with its additional four-character inscription appears to be one from a group of similarly incised, carved cinnabar lacquer boxes produced to imperial order and assigned a specific name. Another example with the same inscription as on the present box was sold in our New York Rooms, 28 March 1996, lot 174. Another example from this group is a square box decorated with horses, bearing the mark 'Zema Baohe', 'Selecting Horses', in the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, Inaugural Exhibition, 1993, illustrated in the Catalogue, vol. 2, no. 326.
