A RARE LATE MING BLUE AND WHITE CENSER
WANLI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN DOUBLE-RECTANGLES AND OF THE PERIOD (1573-1619)

The small rectangular censer painted on each long side with a pair of confronting dragons, moulded on the shorter sides with a pair of animal-head handles flanked by painted cloud scrolls, raised on four shaped legs imitating 'horse-hoof' furniture legs painted on each side with further confronting dragons, minor glaze frits

Similar censers of this rare form have been published: one from the collection of Gustaf Hillestrom, included in the exhibition, Ming blue-and-white, The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, 1964, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 75; and another from the Idemitsu Art Gallery, illustrated in Gen Min no Toji, Tokyo, 1977, no. 116.
