Lot Essay

The present fruit bowl was designed in 1825 by Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard to be included as part of a formal table arrangement. Its clever design included a removable liner with fixed central handle, permitting the contents to be passed at table without disturbing the setting. See Tamara Préaud, The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, Alexandre Brogniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847, The Bard Center for Graduate Studies in the Decorative Arts, New York, 1997, p. 254, no. 65.

The incised JB is for Joseph-German Boileau, employed at Sèvres as a repairer 1783-1791 and again 1812-1843.
