Monte dei Paschi di Siena is one of the oldest still existing banks in the world and was founded in 1472. It established a foundation that concentrated on the bank's collection of paintings, works of art and furniture, mainly of Sienese origins, collected from its inception in 1472.

A pair of stools and a banquette of the same unusual model, presumably originally part of the same suite and also bearing the 'Monte dei Paschi' label was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 30 March 1995, lots 116 and 117.
