Lot Essay

The present dry drug jars are notable for their large size. Both are labeled for Mustard.

See Rudolph E.A. Drey, Apothocary Jars: Pharmaceutical Pottery and Porcelain in Europe and the East 1150 - 1850, London, 1978, p. 60, figs. 24A - 27c. for similar examples. The attribution to Venice is based on a comparison of the present jars with others previously in the collections of Adelbert Freiherr von Lanna, Prague [Rudolph Lepke's Kunst-Auction-Haus, Berlin, 21 March 1911, lots 442, 449 and 558] and of Arthur M. Sackler [Christie's, New York, 6 October 1993, lot 46]. The Sackler catalogue entry gives more examples for comparison.
