Le Mayeur's charcoal drawings tended towards a conventional illusionism, in which he contrasted light and shadow, and emphasized a realistic sense of volume. This is particularly true with present work.

The effect with his drawing always appears effortless and spontaneous - this is by virtue of the medium which requires nothing less as an overly calculated, premeditated line would end up looking self-conscious, ponderous and unexciting. No preparation is needed as the artist is yet again, drawing his most immediate and familiar environ - the Balinese garden. The present work is absolutely fully-formed and self-contained works of art. It is not like some of his other drawings that are initial conception of studies for an eventual oil work, but an end it itself, a perfectly realised synthesis of subject and mastery of means.

The mastery over his technique and subject gives a superb rendition of the garden that is at once realistic and inviting because of its beauty to its viewer. It almost feels like one is invited to watch the beauty not to join as the assemblage is full and complete with the graceful ladies surrounding the lotus pond. The flowers and foliage are essential in the completion of this paradise. One feels that as soon as one enters the scene, it is a colourful and fragrant kingdom of flowers, despite the depiction of only a type of flower - the lotus - the fullness of the composition suggests a richness and diversity that are almost celestial.
