Lot Essay

"Compared with his pre-war Balinese works, the figures tend to be, literally, in the background more and more. They become smaller, less the centre of attention. On the other hand their number is increasing, so that the compositions feature up to five or even ten figures now. Usually these figures are placed under an arch of boughs and flowers. Spaciousness is heightened by the inclusion of the beach-and-seascape in the background. He is creating vistas, as it were. The forcefulness of the colours is not diminished." (Jop Ubbens and Cathinka Huizing, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès: Painter-Traveller, Pictures Publisher, Wijk en Aalburg, The Netherlands, 1995, p. 173.)

The observation of the writers on the late works of the artist befits the present work, which evidently dates from Le Mayeur's post-war Balinese period. As it is often noted, although his thematic range has become limiting by this stage, the freshness he successfully imbued with his late works, never fail to captivate and enchant an onlooker.

Dr. Jop Ubbens has dated this work from the artist's post-war Balinese period.
