Lot Essay

Grant was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1866 after Landseer turned the position down. The present drawing appears to relate to an oil painting in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. There is a related drawing and a second oil painting of Landseer by Grant in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London and and also another oil painting in the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth.

The present drawing comes from an album of drawings and music composed by Sir Hope Grant, who was the youngest brother of Francis Grant, he was a talented soldier who served under Sir Colin Campbell (1776-1847) in India.
