Postcards covering almost the whole span of Lawrence's relationship with Frieda's family. The earliest, in 1913 before their marriage, is written on the train to Eastwood for his sister Ada's wedding ('Garnett was awfully nice, but I don't like Mrs G. ... The Murry's remain fearfully nice. The Westminster has accepted the two sketches'); among the last is a valedictory postcard whilst preparing to leave Italy for the last time in April 1928: 'There is an atmosphere of departure, only departure and departure'. In between, the postcards give news of weather (in Villach 'it's like heaven being cool again', at a chalet at Vaud, Lawrence is 'like a green parrot, utterly astonished' at the sight of deep snow), their travels and Lawrence's health, one inviting Else for Lawrence's birthday, another recounting a hiatus waiting for Frieda at Le Lavandon ('I'm waiting here till she comes. It is wonderful weather and I'm well -- a friendly place, this. But it's time Frieda arrived'); a late postcard assures his mother-in-law of his improved health, and recounts their purchase of watercolours, and search for a lending library ('we are reading Theodor Storm at the moment, in 18 volumes') The postcard from New Zealand announces his presence 'At the Antipodes -- for a day only -- on to Raratonga & Tahiti'.
