EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his second son, Eduard ('Mein lieber Tete'), n.p. [Berlin], n.d. [c.1918], one page, 4to.

A letter of fatherly advice. Einstein is proud to see from a letter that his second son can write so well, and has asked Michele Besso to send him a travel book he asks for, which cannot be sent so easily from Berlin, since one requires special permission. He advises Eduard to 'go walking a great deal so as to get really healthy and don't read too much but spare yourself something for when you are big' - the letter ends with affectionate remarks on Eduard's enjoyment of school, 'because you learn so easily, and because it's fun to be with so many kids, and because you are such funny little bird ['ein drolliger Fink'], who takes pleasure in everything'.

Eduard Einstein's bright, funny nature as a child was to collapse under the strain of mental illness in young adulthood, from the early 1930s. This is apparently the earliest surviving letter from Einstein to his younger son.
