EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son, Hans Albert, n.p., 11 November 1925, 2/3 pages, 4to.

Family tensions and slow scientific work. Einstein is upset at the failure of an acquaintance to reply to reply to a letter after two weeks 'Das is nicht nett' [that is not nice]. Research is under way as to the fate of the brother of Einstein's first wife, Mileva, via letters to a member of the German embassy in Moscow. 'Mit der Wissenschaft geht es langsam und harzig' [things are slow and difficult with my scientific work]', although 'Herr [Jakob] Grommer is with me, and is doing a bit of calculating'. Einstein is looking forward to seeing his son, but only asks him to be a bit more polite to his wife [his second wife, Else].

Mileva's brother had been taken prisoner by the Russian army in World War I. The brilliant mathematician Jakob Grommer (d.1933) worked with Einstein for a decade, longer than any of his other collaborators. Several important joint papers resulted from their work, and Einstein later wrote that Grommer 'assisted me in recent years with all calculations in the area of general relativity theory' (Pais, Subtle is the Lord, pp.487-8).
