4° (182 x 142mm). Title with engraved Commonwealth arms within ornamental square form, engraved headpieces and capitals. (Spotting, occasionally heavy, light soiling.) 19th-century panelled calf gilt, red morocco label to spine, speckled edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Abelius Sammarthanus (inscription to title) -- Mark Pattison, Lincoln College, Oxon (blind-stamp to title) -- British Museum duplicate (stamp to versos of title and last leaf) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners).

FIRST EDITION, issue 3, with the errata on A2, of Milton's response to Defensio Regia, Claude de Saumaise's 1649 attack on the Commonwealth. Milton devoted most of 1650 and what remained of his eyesight to this project, which proved successful in discrediting Saumaise and lending intellectual authority to the young Commonwealth. Mark Pattison, Rector of Lincoln, counts among his writings an edition of Milton's sonnets (1883), and a life of Milton for the English Men of Letters series (DNB). 4° (181 x 134 mm). Title printed in red and black. (Without initial blank, dampstain and soiling to first and last few leaves.) Black morocco by Zaehnsdorf, sides and spine blind-tooled. FIRST EDITION. 'After the Restoration this book, together with his Defensio Pro Populo Anglicano, was ordered by the House of Commons, 16th June 1660, to be burnt by the common hangman' (Pforzheimer). Parker suggests that Andrew Marvell may have assisted Milton in the writing of this work due to his blindness (p. 964).
