MILTON, John (1608-1674). Paradise Lost. A Poem in Twelve Books. The fourth edition, adorn'd with Sculptures. London: Miles Flesher for Jacob Tonson,1688.
2° (379 x 232mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by White after Faithorne, 12 full-page engravings by Burghers chiefly after B. de Medina, list of subscribers, grape watermark. (Occasional light spotting and soiling, one leaf folded, some pencilled marginalia.) Contemporary calf, panelled in blind (heavily rubbed, joints starting). Provenance: Radcliffe (pencilled note) -- JSB (pencilled note date 1894) -- Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners).
THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION -- and one of the earliest examples of financing publication through subscription. 'The earliest serious effort to illustrate an important work of English poetry' (Hodnett, Five Centuries of Book Illustration 1988, p. 63). The illustrations have been enormously influential in subsequent interpretations of Paradise Lost, and are discussed at length in the Riverside Milton. Wing M-2147; Coleridge 93b; Shawcross 345.
