The vendor purchased this gown from the David Weisz auction of the M.G.M. wardrobe on 17 May, 1970 - it was lot W-496. The vendor was 13 years old at the time of the auction and spent all her savings to secure this and one other dress. She vividly recalls the audience giving her a round of applause when she outbid Debbie Reynolds to become the winning bidder.

Words And Music was the biographical story of the songwriting partnership of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz ('Larry') Hart. After starring together in 10 films, this was the last time Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney appeared on screen together.

Apparently, two dresses were made for this scene in the film. The two scenes were shot at different times and Garland had lost a considerable amount of weight before the second shoot. As such, she wears a different belted dress to the one in this lot during the first scene where she sings I Wish We Were In Love Again. During the second scene where she sings Johnny One-Note, she appears to be wearing the dress in this lot.
