Russell Flint made an extensive tour of Spain in 1931, where he made several sketches that were subsequently worked into finished paintings. The country was in the midst of political upheaval. After a huge republican majority was returned in the general election, King Alfonso XIII 'suspended the exercise of Royal power' and went into voluntary exile in Rome. Flint was inspired by vibrancy of Spanish culture and the spirit of the people, which found keenest expression in the Gypsies, or 'Gitanas'. He was to find a ready market for these subjects amongst the British picture buying public.
