Lot Essay

This lantern is closely based upon the model attributed to Pierre Gouthière and dated to around 1785, which is now on the staircase at the Petit Trianon at Versailles. It is illustrated by Pierre Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1987, p.377, fig.384. However the Champalimaud model differs in that it has neither cherubs to the base nor to the central candlearms.
