One with a Bacchic putto holding a dove and tambourine, the other despairing, holding an empty birdcage, each on drapery-swagged naturalistically-carved rocky base and cylindrical red serpentine pedestal swagged with oak branches, on a moulded spreading socle and cut-cornered square base with inset pounced panels, the marble bases repaired and with small chips

Lot Essay

These groups relate to Sèvres groups known as La Cage Vide où La Douleur de Babet and its pendant L'Enfant aux oiseaux, which were based on Favart's comedy La Vallée de Montmorency (see E. Bourgeois, Le Biscuit de Sèvres au XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1909, p.18).
