Lot Essay

This figure of an athlete is illustrated in the catalogue of J. Chuirazzi & Fils, number 7, entitled Discobole.

J. Chuirazzi & Fils specialised in the reproduction of antique prototypes - particularly those dug up in excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum which were moved to the Museum in Naples. Their 1910 catalogue gives a clear indication of the ambitious breadth of their production, although they had been successfully casting since the mid-19th Century. The firm received awards at various late nineteenth Century International Exhibitions.
