The Day-Leeds first saw the light of day - in Leeds - in the form of a cyclecar, in 1912. Its makers, Messrs. Job Day & Co Ltd, were well-established makers of such diverse goods as tea packaging machinery, bacon slicers and, latterly, motorcycles. Shortly before the Great War, a proper light car was marketed, the first examples fitted with 1,130 cc engines supplied by Turners of Wolverhampton. Day-Leeds cars then appeared with T-head engines of their own make, and a slightly larger capacity - 1,286 ccs.
This model was revived after the war, now with electric lighting, but modest and mainly local sales led to the conclusion that demand for a comparatively expensive 10hp car did not justify continued production. The last example left the Beeston Royds Works in 1924, and the firm concentrated on its other lines. Some 300 examples are thought to have been made, and of these, but three still exist.
Sadly this Day-Leeds has seen very better days and was probably in pretty poor order when it joined the collection many years ago. Today, it lacks bonnet, radiator and many other ancillary parts.
Owing to its rarity, it would certainly make sense to return this survivor to the road.
