A pair of Chinese painted clay models of a lady and gentleman, circa 1800

Details
A pair of Chinese painted clay models of a lady and gentleman, circa 1800
with detached nodding heads, the gentleman wearing a Mandarin hat and blue surcoat bearing a rank badge, fitted plaited hair piece, the lady with yellow robes with floral trim and pink under dress -- 9 1/8in. (23cm) high.

The greatest importation of these unfired painted and decorated clay figures from Canton would seem to have started in the 1780's. From that date to the first quarter of the 19th century, a large number of figrues known as 'nodders', were brought at Canton and shipped to America, England and the Continent.
