Tasting note: The brilliant 2000 Magari (6,000 cases) is a blend of 50 Merlot, 25 Cabernet Franc, and 25 Cabernet Sauvignon. Its opaque purple color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of espresso, new saddle leather, blackberries, creme de cassis, smoke, and licorice. The wine is full-bodied and opulently-textured, with fabulous fruit concentration, great purity, and a savory, long mouthfeel. The tannin, acidity, and wood are brilliantly integrated in this exceptional effort. Anticipated maturity: now-2013. Kudos to Angelo Gaja, who has taken up the challenge of producing great wines far from his home base in Barbaresco. This debut release is immensely promising. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.
