A GERMAN THREE-COLOUR GOLD AND PLATINUM SNUFF-BOX
by Charles Colins Sons (fl. c. 1825 - after 1870), marked, Hanau, circa 1850, later struck with two French import marks for gold 1864-1893
Rectangular Rococo-revival box of polished gold, the cover, four sides and base centred by cartouche-shaped frosted gold reserves within scrolling foliate Rococo borders, the reserve on the lid chased in three-colour gold and platinum with a scène champêtre of a couple dancing to a tune played by a flutist seated on a rock in a landscape, the four side and base reserves chased with flowersprays in three-colour gold and platinum, cover and base with fluted rims, the side walls of the lid slightly tapering
