ELZEVIER, Daniel (1626-80) -- Catalogus librorum officinae Danielis Elsevirii. Designans libros ... quorum auctio habebitur. Amstelodami, MDCLXXXI. Paris: Firmin Didot for J. Ch. Motteley, 1823.

12o (164 x 100 mm). Collation: *6; A12 B8. PRINTED ON VELLUM, the only copy. Elzevier device on title and divisional title. (Some browning at edges.) FINE CONTEMPORARY SIGNED RETROSPECTIVE MOSAIC BINDING BY NIEDRéE, Thouvenin's successor: red morocco, covers gold-tooled and inlaid with black morocco to a 16th-century strapwork design, spine similarly decorated in compartments and finely lettered, citron morocco doublures gold-tooled to an 18th-century dentelle design, gilt edges, uncut. Red morocco pull-off case. Provenance: Unidentified illuminated coat-of-arms on an inserted vellum leaf facing the second title.

Didot's Elzevier-style reprint of the exceedingly rare 1681 auction catalogue of the books printed at the Elzeviers' Amsterdam house, which was published one year after Daniel Elzevier's death. The collector Motteley paid Didot for 80 copies to be printed on Holland and 20 copies on large paper. This UNIQUE COPY ON VELLUM was printed for an unidentified noble collector, whose illuminated arms are inserted. The pastiche binding by Niedrée is a masterpiece of finishing, Renaissance on the outside, 18th-century on the inside.
