MÉRARD SAINT JUST, Simon-Pierre de (1749-1812). Voltaíre. Ode. And other verse and drama, letters and prose extracts. [Paris, c. 1782-83]
142 x 74 mm. CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM SIGNED BY THE SCRIBE F.F. FYOT AND BY THE AUTHOR (repeatedly). 84 leaves, mostly quired in sixes. Roman book script in imitation of printing, pen-and-ink title drawing, a few historiated initials, ornamental head- and tailpieces.
ORIGINAL BINDING BY PIERRE-JOSEPH BISIAUX (with binder's ticket): gold-tooled red morocco, multiple roll-tooled borders on sides, flat spine decorated with small tools in compartments. roll-tooled turn-ins, silk liners, blue, white and red headbands. Slipcase. Provenance: written by Fyot for the author (littérateur and bibliophile), who had most of his works either printed in very limited editions or copied by calligraphers -- Inscription signed B, who bought the manuscript for 110 francs from the bookseller Girout on 15th August 1831, stating that Fyot's brother was assistant to the bookseller Chardin and was paid "le pain et l'eau" -- Christie's King Street, 24 June 1992, lot 66.
One of the pieces is entitled: Fragment de Leltomer, Drame en un Acte, et en Vers, Imité de la Tragédie de Shakespear, Intitulé Les Bestes à Cornes. All texts appear to be UNPUBLISHED. The binder Bisiaux, who worked for Mme Du Barry, Voltaire and Beaumarchais, moved in 1783 from the rue du Foin-Saint-Jacques, the address on this label, to the place Maubert. On the other hand the 1783 published catalogue of Mérard Saint Just's library omits this manuscript, while listing four others by Fyot including two on vellum. It must therefore be dated no later than 1783, nor much before. FINE CONDITION.
