8o (196 x 126 mm). Limited edition of 60 copies, NUMBERED 33 FOR MR. AD. BORDES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Vignettes by Paillard after Darbour.

BRILLIANTLY GOLD-TOOLED BINDING BY EMILE MERCIER FOR ADOLPHE BORDES: brown morocco, multiple fillets on sides and in compartments of spine, dentelle border on green morocco doublures, signed by the binder as successor to Cuzin on front doublure, dark watered-silk free endleaves, edges gilt 'sur témoins', original printed wrappers preserved. Chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Adolphe Bordes (his designated copy, inscribed by Béraldi), one of France's most refined bibliophiles at the turn of the century, whose collection was quietly dispersed by the bookseller and expert Louis Giraud-Badin -- Claude Guérin, subsequent owner of the Librairie Giraud-Badin, who formed a small but fine private collection of choice bibliography (his sale, with himself as expert, Drouot 7 December 1990, lot 17).

Emile Mercier (1855-1910) started as doreur in Cuzin's atelier in 1882, which he took over in 1891. His speciality was 'deep' tooling, applying particularly shiny gold, and multiple straight fillets. He was succeeded by his son Georges Mercier. See Devauchelle III, 65-67.
