BURROUGHS, William S. (1914-1997). The Naked Lunch. Paris: Olympia Press, 1959.
8o. Original green printed wrappers; pictorial dust jacket after a design by Brion Gysin (small area of coating peeled away at head of spine); quarter morocco folding case, front cover with morocco onlays duplicating one of Gysin's designs.
FIRST EDITION, second issue, "Francs: 1500" on lower wrapper and title with green typographic border, but with "New Price" inkstamp on lower wrapper. A DOUBLE PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY BURROUGHS AND THE PUBLISHER MAURICE GIRONDIAS first on the flyleaf: "For Roger Richards Ciao & Toodle-Oo Maurice Girondias" and on the title: "For Roger with all best wishes and friendship William Burroughs." Roger Richards was one of the unsung heros of New York's underground literati: with his wife Irvyne, he operated the Rare Book Room on Greenwich Avenue, a focal point for Gregory Corso, Herbert Huncke, Ted Joans, Jack Micheline, Carl Solomon and other transgressive authors whom he championed. Maurice Girondias and his Olympia Press were at the forefront of post-War literary publishing: in addition to The Naked Lunch, Olympia released Nabokov's Lolita, and many other works which challenged cultural and literary convention. Maynard & Miles A2a.
