Mitchell's epic Civil War novel was a huge success; it won the Pulitzer prize for fiction, it has sold more than 8 million copies and has been translated into at least 18 languages. Its international renown was furthered by the film version starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland.
