A rare Victorian double-barrelled musical skeleton clock of exhibition quality, with deadbeat balance wheel escapement
Ross. Second half 19th century
With blued steel and brass cupola top applied with a skeletonised Arabic chapter ring, the cupola supported on four brass scrolling arms eminating from four turned brass columns to each angle, the front frame of ovoid form with pierced and chamfered skeletonised plates with two chain fusees and spring barrels, both trains with fine wheels with six crossings, the deadbeat escapement linked to a large horizontal bimetallic bar balance wheel with hair spring and silvered regulation arc, the music discharged at the hour or manually at will, the silvered tune selection disc signed Ross and engraved with fifteen tunes, the music played on sixteen bells via two sets of sixteen hammers (one set with mute facility) and two transverse-mounted pin barrels of different diameter working in tandem
