A George II silver toilet-box and cover
Mark of Charles Kandler, London, 1727
Slightly tapering cylindrical on reeded foot, the sides applied with four reeded columns and four moulded cartouches, the detachable slightly domed stepped cover with moulded borders and applied with four leaves, the cover finely engraved with a coat-of-arms within strapwork, shells and foliate scrolls, the base engraved with a crest, marked on base and cover, the base also engraved with scratchweight '6=8=1/2'

The arms are those of Howard with the cadency mark of a crescent impaling Blount, for Edward Howard, 2nd son of Lord Thomas Howard (d.1689), second son of Henry 6th Duke of Norlfolk (1628-1683), and his wife Mary, daughter and co-heir of Edward Blount of Blagdon, co. Devon, whom he married in 1727. Edward Howard later succeeded his brother as 9th Duke of Norfolk on the latter's death in 1732. The box would have oringinally formed part of a toilet-service almost certainly given to Mary Blount on her marriage in 1727. A larger box from the service was sold Christie's London, 26 October 1943, lot 71.

Charles Kandler and his successor Charles Frederick supplied the Norfolk family with a large amount of silver up until the 1770s (P. Cameron, 'Henry Jernegan, Charles Frederick Kandler and the client who changed his mind', The Silver Society Journal, 1996, no.8, pp.495-499).
