Lot Essay

One of a number of capriccio workings of designs for pavilions in the parks of Catherine the Great's country estates, for example the Music Pavilion built at Tsarskoye Selo in 1781-4, which has a similar dome and semi-circular portico to the present drawing and of which there is a view in the Biblioteca Civica, Bergamo (Disegni di Giacomo Quarenghi, exhib. cat., Bergamo, Palazzo della Ragione, and elsewhere, 1967, no. 176).
