LEONARD VALK (1675-1746)
Asia...Totius Asiae novior accura tabula. Hand-covered engraved wallmap of Asia [Amsterdam: c.1690]. The map comprising a central map on four sheets, title set in monumental cartouche at upper left, inset double-hemisphere world map at lower left, with decorative surround of figures and animals, compass rose, seas decorated with ships, seperate foliate strips forming a border to the top and bottom of the map, the whole surmounted by a title banner in three sections, other margins decorated with 14 large separately engraved vignettes, including Kaschan, Saba, Smerne, Constaninople, Batavia, Kanton, and Honan, each with a city view and figures in the foreground. (Some light staining and browning, some minor restoration.)
A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT WALLMAP OF ASIA, IN FINE CONTEMPORARY COLOUR, with elaborate banner title and side vignettes. Leonard Valk, son of Gerard was born in London in 1675 and came to work with his father at the family business in Amsterdam. Gerard and Leonard were best known for their globes which they produced in pairs at 9, 12 and 15 inch diameters. This wallmap is an unusual departure for the family firm and on each sheet is engraved the privilege for the printing. It seems that Valk's series of continental wallmaps must have been issued in small numbers. His wallmap of Europe was presented by VOC officials to the Japanese, now mounted on a screen at Kobe City Museum. Certainly this example would have been an ideal commission for a VOC official.
