[Asia]. A manuscript and watercolour map of Asia, set in a watercolour and gouache trompe-l'oeil surround. [Germany: circa 1811]. Map: 200 x 232mm., surround: 502 x 537mm. (Neat repairs to margins on verso of mount).

A HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED AND DECORATIVE WORK. The border is presented as a light and dark brown chequered board, onto which 12 images have been 'pinned', and in the centre 'hangs' the mounted yellow-framed map of Asia. The pinned images along the lower margin are geographical or cosmological: a pair of hemispherical maps centering on the North and South poles, and a map of the solar system. The remaining images comprise a double-portrait of Confucius and 'Cang-hi'; a portrait of 'Kayser Yu'; a picture of 'Ein Mandarin'; a Cochinchinese soldier; a horse and rider; a Chinaman; a figure in a mountainous landscape; a yak; a muntjac deer. Little is known of Otto Staab: he is the possible author of a science textbook published in Frankfurt in 1807: Odo Staabs Potographie, oder die Beschreibung der Gträ(nke aller Völker in der Welt. On the evidence of the present map he was evidently an artist and designer of some accomplishment, and the subject matter suggests that it was prepared either for his own use (perhaps as a school tutor) or perhaps as artwork for an intended publication.
