Asia, the first part, being an accurate description of Persia, and the several provinces thereof. The vast Empire of the Great Mogol, and other parts of India: and their several Kingdoms and Regions. London: by the author, 1673. 2° (418 x 264mm). Engraved frontispiece before letters, title printed in red and black, 4 double-page maps, 32 engraved plates, double-page, numerous engravings throughout text. (Without the engraved general map found in some copies, short marginal tear in 2G1, very light occasional spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, sides panelled in gilt with double rules and corner fleurons, spine gilt, red morocco label (rebacked preserving the original spine, rubbed, some flaking), modern morocco backed cloth box. Provenance: 18th-century English owner (obscured bookplate) -- 'P.C.' (collation note dated 6.6.30) -- The Cruising Association (bookplate, title blindstamp, small gilt stamp on upper cover; Christie's 12 December 1986, lot 254).

FIRST EDITION OF OGILBY'S CLASSIC WORK ON ASIA. Although described as a first part, no second part was published. DNB suggests that the second part of this work, always regarded as a separate publication, was Ogilby's Embassy to the Emperour of China, published in a second edtion in 1673.
