4° (272 x 190mm). Woodcut vignette title-pages, 2 full-page woodcuts, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, printed in double columns. (Vol. I lacking last blank, title-page repaired at outer margin, one preliminary leaf trimmed at lower margin, a short tear from margin of one leaf, last leaf Vol. II re-margined, final gathering browned at lower outer margins, some light foxing at end.) A VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL HISTORY OF THE JESUIT MISSIONS TO ASIA, OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE FOR JAPAN, published at the beginning of the "Golden Age" of Christianity in Japan. The work is considered the best survey of Japan and the Japanese at the end of the sixteenth century, and is one of the earliest vernacular histories of the missions. It follows Francis Xavier's mission to Japan, 1549, and was brought up to date by Guzman from the Jesuit letters as they reached Spain. These letters were of two types: private and confidential letters or synthetic accounts expressly composed for publication in Europe. Vol. I, Book IV is devoted to China. Cordier, Japonica 241; Cordier, Sinica 784-5; Palau 111814; Lust 816; Brunet II, 1839; Tavera 1292. (2)
