[Japan] Japoniae Insulae descriptio. [Antwerp: 1595]. Hand-coloured engraved map of Japan by Ortelius after Teixiera, 380 x 500mm. Title and scale bar set in decorative strapwork cartouches, stippled seas decorated with ships, elaborate border, window mount.

An important map of Japan creating a new image of the country which dominated European mapping for over a century. Ortelius based his map on information supplied by Luis Teixeira, in the form of a letter and a map received in February 1592. Teixeira, who was cartographer to the court of Spain, had never been to Asia, but is assumed ot have used Portuguese sources. Lutz Japan IV.I.
