CLEMENT VIII (1536-1605)
Breve S.D.N. Clementis Papæ VIII. Circa accessum Regularium in Iaponicas, & adiacentes Chinæ, & Indiæ Orientalis Insulas. Rome: Cameræ Apostolicæ, 1606. 2° (310 x 211mm). One leaf folded, large title woodcut. (Lower and fore-edges restored, but chipped and fragile, worm hole affecting four words.) Unbound. Modern morocco-backed box.
EXCEEDINGLY RARE PAPAL BRIEF issued by Clement VIII on the evangelization of Asia and of great political and commercial significance for colonial missions. This Brief broke the Jesuit monopoly in Asia by allowing mendicant orders, the Franciscans to preach in the region. Since the Royal Decree and the Papal Bull issued by Gregory XIII in 1585, the Jesuit order alone had been permitted into Japan and China for the practice and teaching of their rites. Streit; Bibliotheca Missionum 1038.
