ZUDA ROKASHI (1654-1738)

Nansenbushu Bankoko Shoka No Zu [Visualised map of all the countries in Jambudvipa]. Kyoto: [1710 or later]. Woodcut folding map of the world in Chinese, folding on rice paper, on twelve sheets joined, overall 1180 x 1460mm. Uncoloured map, showing the Buddhist view of the world, centred on China, with Japan to the east, America north of Japan and Europe to the far west, drawn as a group of islands. Title in banner at upper border, text block panels with references to Buddhist writings to lower left and right corners, seas with stylised waves, islands, rivers and mountains profusely named. In folding form with original blue papered boards with title label.

An impressive Japanese 'wallmap' of the world by Zuda Rokashi, Priest Hotan, and founder of Kegonje Temple in Kyoto. A fine example of the fusion of Buddhist and European cartography. Rokashi based his image of the world on two untitled manuscript maps of Jambudvipa attributed to Sokaku which appeared in 1698 and 1709, and added texts and embellishments. In the centre of the map is depicted the 'Jambu-Dvipa' with the sacred Lake of Anavatapta and the 4 rivers Ganges, Oxus, Indus and Tarim flowing out. The images are based on the Japanese version of Hsuan-Tgang's Chinese narrative Si-yu-ku printed in 1653. Cortazzi Isle of Gold p.38; History of Cartography, vol. 2.2, pp 428-429.
