Lacquer bottles in this style may have been made individually in the Momoyama period (1568-1603), whereas in the Edo period they were more usually part of a picnic set. The boldness of the style of this fine bottle is paralleled in a bottle exhibited from a Japanese private collection in the Metropolitan Museum, Turning point: Oribe and the Arts of Sixteenth-Century Japan (New York, 2003), no. 155.
