This subject is derived from the first chapter of the Choju-giga, a series of handscrolls of the Heian period (794-1185), previously attributed to Toba Sojo. The most famous of the satirical scrolls, shows hares and foxes as priests, a frog as a Buddha, a monkey as a mendicant, hares and monkeys as sumo.
