A Black-Lacquer Suit of Armor**
Edo period (18th century)
The suit constructed of lacquered-leather kiritsuke kozane (solid plates lacquered to resemble scales) laced in blue comprising a sixty-four plate hoshi bachi lacquered black with a four-stage chrysanthemum tehen kanamono in gilt-copper, shakudo and red lacquer, the turnbacks gold lacquered-leather trimmed with metal edging carved with scroll and applied with gilt-copper family crests with a stylized floret, the helmet fitted with four-lame neck guard, the forecrest a lacquered wood model of a long-eared hare; the face mask black lacquer with an applied moustache and red-lacquer lips, fitted with a four-lame throat guard, the interior red lacquer; the two-plate cuirass lacquered with a family crest in gold on the muna ita (top section of cuirass) and fitted with six sections of five-lame tassets; chu-sode shoulder guards integral with the chain mail and splint-plate sleeves, the forearm plates lacquered gold; thigh guards of sparse splints; gold-lacquer splint shin guards; bear-fur boots; two wood storage boxes with leather covers
