Lot Essay

The design of this table is closely related to the work of David Roentgen, the German cabinet maker and entrepreneur who was active during the latter part of the 18th century. In particular the marquetry, with ribbon-tied floral rose sprays is very similar to that on an oval Table à Écrire, executed circa 1775-80, sold Christies, London, 13 June 2003, lot 55, while the brass-inset fluting was a common feature of his work.
