Lot Essay

Although the fretwork is different, this screen is closely related to one probably supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Edward Knight, Jun. at Wolverley House, Worcestershire circa 1765 (illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, p. 183, fig. 332).
Chippendale also supplied to Sir Lawrence Dundas, Bt., on 28 October 1763, '2 very Neat Mahogany folding Firescreens cover'd wt fine India pictures [Chinese paintings] & Cutt fretts at Bothom a case and packing' at a total cost of £5-18s-0d (ibid., vol. I, p. 160). A firescreen by tradition from his London house, 19 Arlington Street, and possibly one of the two supplied by Chippendale to Sir Lawrence, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 21 June 1990, lot 27. The fretwork on it was different to the present lot and Wolverley screen.

The late Edward Croft-Murray was Keeper of Prints & Drawings at the British Museum, London.
