A set of related George III hollow-seated hall stools is at Ham House, Surrey (P. Thornton, 'The Furnishing and Decoration of Ham House', Furniture History, 1980, fig. 170). A related hall chair pattern featured in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, pl. 51. With its patera roundels, its form also relates to that of a Roman 'curule' seat pattern in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 20, no. 5 (see lot 209 in this sale).
