Lot Essay

This library bergere reflects the French Grecian fashion popularised by T. Sheraton's Encyclopaedia, 1804; and relates to the contemporary 'Ashburnham' and 'Uxbridge' chairs manufactured by the London & Lancaster firm of Gillows. Related bergeres supplied by Gillows for Mere, Cheshire were sold by Mrs Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire; Christie'’s house sale, Mere Hall, Cheshire, 23 May 1994, lot 197.
