Each covered in close-nailed leather with an arched back, scrolled arms and pierced vase-shaped splat, above a padded bowed seat, on square chamfered legs joined by turned stretchers, minor variations (2)

Lot Essay

A set of library chairs of this type, with ribbon-fretted and upholstered backs at Wilton House, Wiltshire is illustrated H. Montgomery-Massingberd, Great Houses of England and Wales, London, 1994 (p. 121); while a related single chair was formerly at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire (sold by Viscount Scarsdale, Christie's, London, 21 June 1990, lot 154). A near pair of chairs, matching the same pattern of the left illustrated chair of the present pair, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 11 July 1997, lot 121.
